PURPOSE:To obtain a method of and apparatus applicable for the on-line by monitoring a phase modification based on measured values from a measurement of the attenuation of a radiation by transmitting it through a hot steel material to be monitored while the thickness of a part through which the radiation transmits is measured. CONSTITUTION:A hot steel material 1 is fed in the direction of the arrow falling momentarily. A radiation generating source 2 is provided below the moving area of the steel material 1 and a scintillation probe 3 is set at the position facing it through the steel material 1. The transmission N(T) of the radiation is determined through a counter 6 and timer 7. A thermometer 4 is provided at a part of the steel material 1 through which the radiation transmits and a pulse generator 10 is provided on the side thereof to detect the measured position. A thickness gate 5 comprising laser displacement gages 5a and 5b is provided at a part slightly deviated in the lengthwise direction from that as mentioned above in such a manner as to face each other vertically sandwitching the steel material 1. Actual data pertaining to the density and the temperature of the steel material are memorized in a memory device 9. Said data are inputted into an arithmetic unit 8 thereby enabling the identifying and detecting of phase and the monitoring of phase modification. |
