COLOR DISPLAY APPARATUS USING TWO PANELS

A color display apparatus using two panels is provided to reduce the output power of a light source by using two light modulator elements. A color display apparatus includes a buffer memory, an image processor, a fixed color panel(730), a variable color panel(740), a fixed color light source, a plurality of variable color light sources, a color synthesizing system(750), and a projection optical system(760). The buffer memory stores RGB information corresponding to a single frame. The image processor reads the RGB information from the buffer memory, extracts fixed color image information corresponding to a fixed color light from the RGB information, and extracts variable color image information corresponding to a plurality of variable color lights from the RGB information. The fixed color panel modulates the fixed color light according to the fixed color image information and outputs a modulated fixed color light. The plurality of variable color panel modulates the variable color lights according to the variable color image information and sequentially outputs the modulated variable color lights. The fixed color light source irradiates the fixed color light to the fixed color panel. The plurality of variable color light sources irradiates the variable color lights to the variable color light panel. The color synthesizing system synthesizes the modulated fixed color light and the modulated variable color lights to generate a composite signal. The projection optical system scans the composite signal on a screen(770) in a predetermined direction.
