A file transmission method and an apparatus thereof are provided to encode a file so as to be suitable for the output condition of a connected portable terminal, and then transmit the encoded file. If a video transmission command is inputted, an interface unit(112) receives video output information of a portable terminal(150), and then transmits video data converted according to a selected connection mode. A connection mode selection unit(106) selects the connection mode according to data to be transmitted. A storage unit(104) stores video files. An encoding unit(108) encodes the video data which will be transmitted according to the video output information of the portable terminal received through the interface unit. A buffer memory unit(110) temporarily stores the encoded video. A controller(118) converts the connection mode if the video file to be transmitted is selected to obtain the video output information of a terminal for transmitting the file, and then controls so that the video file can be encoded so as to be suitable for the obtained video output information, and then transmitted.
