PURPOSE:To obtain the liquid crystal element having excellent display characteristics by providing metallic films in common use as light shielding films between picture elements and metallic wirings on a substrate. CONSTITUTION:Color filters 12 of three colors; green, red and blue are formed in desired patterns on the substrate 11 and since steps exist in the color filters 12 themselves, an org. resin layer 13 is formed as an over coating agent on the color filters 12 in order to fill the steps. The metallic films 14 of Al and the metallic films 15 of Ni are thereafter continuously deposited by evaporation and the metallic films 14, 15 are etched by a photoprocess to remove the metallic parts in the picture elements of the liquid crystal element; thereafter, ITO films 16 which are metal oxide films are formed by a sputtering method. The metallic films in common use as the light shielding films between the picture elements and the metallic wirings are provided on the substrate 11 in such a manner.
