Phenols are extracted from solutions thereof by bringing the solution into contact with an organo-clay derivative whereby the phenol is adsorbed by the organo-constituent of the organo-clay derivative, the said organo-constituent being derived from a primary, secondary or tertiary amine or a quaternary ammonium compound containing at least 8 carbon atoms, the solvent used being one which is not itself preferentially adsorbed by the organo-clay derivative. The preferred solvent is water. The clays used are preferably natural clays or clay minerals with ionexchange centres and expanding lattices, such as bentonite or montmorillonite. Liverite, kaolinite and synthetic alumina silica compounds are also specified. The phenol may be recovered from the organo-clay derivative by treatment with steam or by elution e.g. with alkali solutions. In a modified process a solution containing phenol and a base as specified above is contacted with a clay mineral. In examples phenol, cresols, resorcinol and pyrocatechol are extracted from solutions in water or cyclohexane. Bases specified are do-, tetra- and hexa-decylamine, dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium salts and "Ethomeens" (Registered Trade Mark). |
