Bubble nucleation zones formed on a heat transfer surface 12 to enhance the nucleate boiling of liquids adjacent thereto have a surface consisting of a low surface energy material 11 having a contact wetting angle with the liquid of at least 80 degrees. In one form as shown each zone consists of an indentation or alternatively an elongate scratch similar in cross-section to that shown, coated with the low surface energy material which may, for example, be polytetrafluorethylene, polychlorotrifluorethylene or a mixture of these two, polyethylenetetraphthalate, bis - phenol A polycarbonate, polystyrene, phenol - formaldehyde resin, polyethylene, organopolysiloxane adhesive and isomerized hydrocarbon rubber. Methods of applying the materials are mentioned. In a further form described the bubble nucleation zones may consist of buttons or studs of the low surface energy material (in this case diamond) protruding from the surface into the liquid. This latter arrangement is said to be suitable for the heating of liquid metals such as sodium or potassium.</p> |
