In a pug mill having conveying screw sections 4 and interrupted screw kneading vanes 7 in a hous - ing having inwardly directed teeth 10, the housing is formed in a plurality of sections of which are placed upstream of the discharge zone is axially reciprocable; as shown, it is the section 3. including the kneading zone 8 and filling hopper 6. In another embodiment, (see Fig. 2, not shown) the housing is in three sections of which the middle one is reciprocated. A gas discharge opening is provided in the discharge section of the housing and the edge of the reciprocating section scrapes the entrance thereby. The discharge section of the housing may be rotated in the same or opposite direction as the discharge screw section at a steplessly variable rate whereby the rate of discharge may be greatly varied from zero to a maximum. The discharge screw section may be detachable.
