A coated regenerated cellulose film is produced by applying to a regenerated cellulose film in a water-swollen state an anchoring agent comprising an aqueous solution or dispersion of a polyacetal which has been formed by condensing a glycol, or a mixture of a glycol with up to 50 mol. per cent of one or more other glycols or polyols, with an aldehyde, drying the cellulose film and curing the applied polyacetal, and then applying a coating composition to the surface of the film. The molecule of the aldehyde may have not more than 8 carbon atoms in the monomeric form; examples are given. The glycol may be a polyalkylene glycol, examples of which are given. The polyacetal may be modified with an aminotriazine, e.g. melamine, aceto and benzoguanamine. The water-swollen regenerated cellulose film may be treated with the polyacetal by passing the film through a bath containing an aqueous solution or dispersion of the polyacetal. The bath may also contain a plasticizing agent, examples specified, for the regenerated cellulose film, or after treatment with the polyacetal, the film may be passed through a bath containing a plasticizing agent for the regenerated cellulose film. After treatment with the polyacetal the film may be washed before treatment with the plasticizing agent. The water-swollen regenerated cellulose film may be sprayed with the solution or dispersion of the polyacetate, partially dried and then treated with a solution of a plasticizing agent. An acid catalyst, examples are given, may be incorporated in the solution or dispersion of the polyacetal. The polyacetal may be present in the solution or dispersion in an amount between 0.1 and 6.0% by weight. The coating composition may comprise nitrocellulose, cellulose esters such as cellulose acetate, an alkyl cellulose such as methyl or ethyl cellulose, deacetylated chitin, rubber, chlorinated rubber, rubber hydrochloride, an alkyl methacrylate such as butyl methacrylate, a wax such as montan, carnauba or beeswax, a polyolefine such as polyethylene or polypropylene, or a vinylidene chloride copolymer with, for example, vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate. |
