<PICT:1067794/C1/1> In a process in which a liquid is passed upwardly through a granular filter medium contained in a housing between two screens 3, 4 in order to filter the liquid or perform a sorption reaction on it, the housing is so shaped and the flow rates and grain sizes so arranged that the liquid passes through a lower region of the housing in which the medium is undergoing turbulent motion prior to passing through a fixed layer of medium maintained against the upper screen 3. The medium may be a mixture of materials, and a fixed layer of the heavier grains may be maintained on lower screen 4. A pump 7a may maintain the flow through the housing, when the rate of withdrawal and supply of liquid at conduits 6, 5 falls off. The housing shown comprises two frusto-conical sections only, but cylindrical sections may be added between them and/or to their free ends (Fig. 2, not shown). Alternatively a single frusto-conical section, possibly with one or two cylindrical sections joined thereto, may be used. |
