Justifying type.-Apparatus for accumulating line length information comprises a keyboard, a conductor corresponding to each character leading to means for calculating relative character width, and means for multiplying the relative width by the set size. The means for calculating relative width comprises an array of columns and rows of magnetic memory devices. A conductor from a type face selector switch is threaded through each column of magnets, while each character conductor is threaded through the one magnet in each column corresponding to the relative width of the character in the corresponding type face, each row of magnets corresponding to a given width and having an output conductor threaded through all the magnets therein. In operation, depression of a character key closes a contact in the circuit of the corresponding conductor and thereafter closes a universal contact, whereupon a pulse generator sends a current through the character conductor and the selected type face conductor. In the case of the magnet situated in the selected type face column and in the correct width value row, the current from both selected input conductors passes through it, and the sum of the currents is strong enough to energize it and produce a pulse on the output conductor. The multiplying means comprises a similar array of magnets, one set of input conductors leading from the relative width calculating means outputs and the other set leading from a series of set selection switches, the output conductors being energized so as to commence a binary counter transmitting information as to the product of the relative width and the set size, i.e. the actual width in the composed line. Each input conductor representing a relative width is in this case threaded through one or more magnets in each column to give the correct product in binary form. If the point set has not the same nominal value as the set size, the multiplying means is additionally controlled by circuit responsive to the type face and the point size. The relative width calculating means and the multiplying means each comprise one or more interchangeable plug-in cards, referred to as " style cards " and " set cards". In another form, the magnets in both arrays are actuated to assume "0" and "1" states by currents of selected polarity passed through the column inputs, followed by a positive current passed through the selected width input. Magnet resetting means are provided. The magnets may be replaced by resistance-diode "AND " circuits. |
