Heading B1T A filter element separates liquid contaminants from a flow of gas and at the same time acts as a detector for such components. The filter element comprises a filtering medium of material which absorbs the liquid and has dispersed throughout it a dye which is soluble in the absorbed liquid for indicating when the medium is saturated. The particles of dye do not colour the filtering medium until dissolved in the absorbed liquid. In the embodiment shown compressed air containing oil and water droplets enters at 9 and flows in direction of arrows through brush elements 13 and then through wire mesh 17 which agglomerate and remove larger droplets before it passes through element 18. The element 18 is preferably a cloth bag or translucent tube filled with a hydrocarbon material such as granular, particulate, or fibrous polyethylene or polypropylene with an oil-soluble dye dispersed throughout such as a methyl derivative of azo benzene-4-azo-naphthol,diethyl-amino-azo-benzene, or alkyl derivative of azo-2-naphthol. |
