A joint for interconnecting pipe sections, preferably of plastics material, comprises a tulipshaped socket 1, a plain cylindrical spigot 2, an annular seal 4 of rubber or other resilient material having a heel or flange 5 and two lips 7 and 8 which bear respectively against the interior surface of the socket and exterior surface of the spigot, and a ring 3 snap-fastened to the socket and clamping the seal thereto, said ring having an inwardly-directed flange 12 defining an opening having a diameter slightly greater than that of the spigot. As illustrated more clearly in Fig. 1 (not shown), circumferentially-spaced projections 11 on the ring 3 are adapted to snap-fasten over a peripheral flange 9 on the socket and to clamp the heel of the seal against the end face of the socket. The spigot may then be inserted to complete the joint, the degree of insertion being sufficiently great to allow for lengthwise expansion of the pipe sections. Annular semicircular ribs 7a are provided on the inner side of the lip 7 to aid sealing of the joint. Alternatively, a bead may be provided on the inner periphery 6 of the seal level with the heel 5. As illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), differently-sized spigots may be sealingly coupled in the same socket by utilizing rings which only differ by the size of opening therein and seals which only differ in their radial thickness. |
