Catalyst residues are removed from a polyolefin obtained using an organometallic catalyst, by mixing a hot polymer/hydrocarbon solution with water and then separating the water containing the catalyst residues, e.g. by decantation, following which the polyolefin is separated from the hydrocarbon. Optionally the process includes a pre and/or after treatment comprising washing cold polymer/hydrocarbon slurry with water. An alkaline material such as potassium, sodium or ammonium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, or ethylene diamine may be present. Demineralized water may be used. A countercurrent process for use in continuous polymerization processes is described. The examples are concerned with the polyolefins produced using Ziegler-type catalysts, in particular polyethylene and polypropylene. |
