Thermoplastic mould d cubic, parallelepipedic or cylindrical elements, or plates or tiles suitable for use as surfacing materials in the building industry, e.g. wall, floor or table coverings, are produced with an ingrained pattern by mould ng together, under heat and pressure in a mould, particles comminut d from differently coloured batches of thermoplastic material; each batch being formed by compounding, e.g. using a calender, rolls or extruder, thermoplastics material, e.g. P.V.C. or ethylene or propylene polymers or copolymers, lubricant stabilizer and colouring agent, to which filler may be added, into a web, strand or strip. At least one of the, batches may be formed by compounding particulate material of one colour with particulate material of a different colour to form, when comminuted, a marbled or veined particulate material for moulding with one or more materials of a different colour. The particulate material may contain particles having dimensions of the same or greater thickness than that of the moulded article, e.g. to produce transparent interspersions, or may contain particles provid d with a differently coloured coating to produce a framing of the particles in the mould d article. The particulate material may be produced by grinding, cutting or stamping to form variously sized regular or irregular shaped particles. The moulded article may be provided with a roughened surface to facilitate adhesion and/or a smooth,'embossed, lustrous or matt finish. |
