A rotary-piston I.C. engine of the oscillating- vane type comprises a piston 3 that is capable of oscillating about an axis 29 at its centre relative to a casing including arcuate walls 30, 31 connected to each other by abutments or so-called head pieces 32, 33 and side walls or plates (44 1 , 44 2 ) Fig.4 (not shown), which contain bearings (47, 48) for a shaft, Fig.2 (not shown), supporting the piston, valves 35 for controlling inlet and outlet manifold passages 39 being lodged in the head pieces and actuated by cam-shafts 37 that are connected to a power-output shaft 18 by a chain 38. The walls 30, 31 and the head pieces are provided with spaces 34 for a cooling liquid. Pumps 42 are connected to the lowermost camshaft 37 by chains 45 and serve to propel lubricating oil through a cooler 43, passages (46, 49) in the plates (44 1 , 44 2 ), the bearings (47, 48), the space within the piston, apertures (3 2 , 3 3 ), Fig. 2, in the piston to lubricate the exterior thereof, and grooves defined by radial and axial sealing strips (3 4 , 3 5 ) in the piston, which grooves direct lubricant collected thereby back to the bearings. The shaft supporting the piston is attached to a crank-shaft (4) that is coupled to a ratchet-mechanism (not shown in the drawings) by a link (14), Fig.3 (not shown), said mechanism being coupled to the shaft 18 to effect uni-directional rotation thereof. A second embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), differs from that according to Fig.1 mainly in that the valves are dispensed with and the engine is adapted to effect a two-stroke cycle of operations, spaces on opposite sides of the piston being connected to each other by transfer passages (56) having ports (55, 57) controlled by the piston. The piston also controls inlet and outlet ports (51, 58) in the walls 30, 31. The transfer passages are formed in the side plates (44 1 , 44 2 ). |
