1,226,903. Nickel-plating polyesters. FARBWERKE HOECHST A. G. April 24, 1969 [April 24, 1968], No.21043/69. Heading C7F. Shaped polyester articles are etched by treatment with an aqueous alkali hydroxide solution, treated with halogenating agents, and then nickelled by immersion in a solution of biscyclooctadiene- (1, 5)-nickel (o) in benzene. The polyester may be polyethylene terphthalate, polycyclohexane-(1, 4)- dimethylol terephthalate or a modified polyethylene terephthalate containing, in addition to terephthalic acid, other acids such as isophthalic acid, naphthalene dicarboxylic acid-(2, 6) or adipic acid, or containing in addition to ethylene glycol, other diols such as neopentyl glycol or butanediol-(1, 4). Etching is performed in 10-50% alkali hydroxide at 50-120‹ C. for 5-30 minutes, preferably in NaOH. The halogenating agent may be a chlorinated hydrocarbon, e.g. chlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene or tetrachlorethane, or an inorganic agent such as sulphuryl chloride, thionyl chloride, PCl 3 or PBr 3 in a solvent, or a solution of Cl 2 or Br 2 in CCl 4 may be used. Nickeling is performed by immersing the treated article in a 1-3% solution of biscyclooctadiene-(1, 5)-nickel (o) in benzene at 10-60‹ C. for 2 to 20 minutes.
|
