1,148,597. Handling radio-active material. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. 3 June, 1966 [15 June, 1965], No. 24837/66. Heading B4Q. A lock chamber 4 is interposed between a working cell 22 and shielded lock (not shown) situated within the thickness of the shield wall 1, the chamber 4 having transparent side windows 6, a sealing door 16 opening into the cell 22 and being sealed at its opposite end by bellows 5 to a flange 3 surrounding a door 3 leading to a transfer aperture of the shielded lock. This transfer aperture is closed by a door 2. Within the chamber 4 is a tray 8 for carrying the radio-active materials to be transferred between the cell 22 and the shielded lock, this tray being supported by a frame 11 mounted for sliding movement on guides 13, the guides having threaded holes 14 co-operating with vertical threaded rods 18. Thus by rotating the rods 18 by a motor 19 the tray 8 may be lowered on to a horizontally slidable shelf 21, the latter being movable out of the shielded lock into the chamber 4 after opening the doors 2, 3. Further lowering of the frame 11 causes disengagement of the tray therefrom and enables shelf 21 together with the tray to be moved into the shielded lock. To place material in the tray from the cell 22 the door 16 is opened and the tray 8 is temporarily placed in the cell. |
