[Also in Division B1] Polymerization is effected in the presence of a catalyst which results from the pyrolysis of an alkyl aluminium compound at a temperature greater than 400‹ F. and a compound which is a Lewis base, an aluminium chelate which contains no active hydrogen, a transition metal compound or water. Examples describe (1) the polymerization of propylene oxide in the presence of aluminium pyrolates at 230‹ F. for 48 hours, (2) copolymerization of propylene oxide with allyl glycidyl ether, 4-vinylcyclohexane monoxide, 1: 7 octadiene monoxide or glycidyl methacrylate at 176‹ F. for 18 hours, (3) polymerization of 4-methyl-1-pentene oxide, 1: 3-propylene oxide, styrene oxide, epichlorhydrin, or propylene sulphide, (4) polymerization of 2-methyl-2-butene oxide, cyclohexane epoxide or t-butyl vinyl ether (Example 14). Aluminium pyrolates in combination with TiCl 4 are used to polymerize ethylene styrene 4-methyl pentene-1 and allyladamantene in Examples 17-20.</p> |
