The invention comprises (a) a process for producing equilin from a compound of formula wherein R is C, C-H, C-O Acyl, C-CH 2 OH or C-CH 2 O Acyl, R<SP>1</SP> is hydroxy, acyloxy or keto and R<SP>2</SP> is a chain of formula wherein R 3 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, by incubation with a micro-organism selected from Bacterium cyclooxidans, Mycobacterium rhodochrous, Corynebacterium simplex and Nocardia corallina, (b) Cholesta-5,7-diene-3#,19#-diol diacetate, prepared by irradiation of the 5-en in admixture with N-bromo-succinimide, (c) 19- hydroxy-cholesta-4,7-dien-3-one, prepared from compound (b) by hydrolysis and Oppenauer oxidation, (d) 3, 19-diacetoxy-cholesta-3,5,7-diene, prepared by conversion of compound (c) to its acetate followed by enol acylation, (e) 10- acetoxy-cholesta-4,7-dien-3-one, prepared by reaction of compound (c) with lead tetraacetate, (f) 19-hydroxy-cholesta-5,7-dien-3-one, prepared by treatment of compound (c) with sodium methoxide in dimethyl sulphoxide, (g) 17#-(2<SP>1</SP>- (6<SP>1</SP>-methyl-heptyl))-estra-5,(10),7-dien-3-one, prepared by treatment of compound (c) with zinc dust in glacial acetic acid, and (h) 19-nor- Cholesta-4,7-dien-3-one, prepared by treatment of compound (g) with methanolic hydrochloric acid or methanolic potassium hydroxide. |
