[Also in Division C7] A thermoelectric leg is provided at one end with an attached layer of a material such that, when the leg is held in pressure contact with an electrode at the operating temperature of a generator incorporating the leg, the layer is plastically deformable to provide a good electrical contact between the leg and the electrode. A similar layer may be provided at the other end of the leg. One leg material is 95 mol. per cent of an even part mixture of lead and till tellurides with 5 mol. per cent of manganese telluride and having added thereto 2 atomic per cent thereof of sodium; the layer material in this case is a similar material not containing the manganese telluride. The leg and layer may be made as a unit by pressing adjacent powder layers and by sintering the compact in a reducing atmosphere. Other materials are lead germanium telluride for the leg with lead telluride for the layer; silver antimony telluride for the leg with antimony telluride for the layer; and lead germanium telluride for the leg with a similar material containing excess lead or tellurium for the layer. Fig. 1 depicts a sub-assembly for a generator, having thermoelectric elements 13, 14 each bonded to nickel-plated copper electrodes 15 sliding loosely within a finned aluminium heat sink 15 which houses the pressurizing springs. Attached to the element 13 and between it and the iron electrode connector 19 is the plastically deformable layer. The connector is insulated by mica 20 from a stainless steel body heated by a gas burner.
