In an ignition system comprising a series circuit of a switching device G, an inductance L, a surface discharge plug P and a capacitor C, the latter being connectible to a charging circuit, the surface discharge plug has a third electrode 3 which is connected to a point between the inductance and switching device to complete a path across the inductance whose impedance at the start of capacitor discharge is above and during the capacitor discharge automatically decreases below the total actual impedance of the capacitor and surface discharge plug. An additional ionizable zone may be formed in a recess between the third electrode and the end portion of the inner tubular electrode of the plug. The inductance L may be included in the plug. As shown the switching device may comprise an auxiliary spark gap G which may be triggerable by a control electrode. Alternatively the switching device may comprise a controlled rectifier. |
