[Also in Division H1] An ignition system has means for inducing an ignition voltage at the coil secondary winding 28 comprising (a) a first thyristor 46 in series with the coil primary winding (b) a second thyristor 54 having its cathode coupled to the cathode of the first thyristor (c) a capacitor 56 coupling the anodes of the first and second thyristors (d) a two-stage trigger means actuatable by rotatable parts of the engine and turning on the first thyristor when in one of its stages (e) a transformer 84 for charging the capacitor when the first thyristor is on, and (f) circuitry for turning the second thyristor on when the trigger means switches to its other stage, the second thyristor discharging the capacitor through the thyristors to turn off the first thyristor rapidly. The thyristors may be silicon controlled rectifiers as shown the trigger means comprises an oscillator. The transformer may comprise a core 88 having a gap 90 and the trigger means may comprise a web 130 moving through the gap of the core to start and stop oscillation. In a modification the trigger means comprises breaker points and the transformer is a saturable transformer. |
