[Also in Division C4] The novel #-type crystalline quinacridone having a stated X-ray diffraction pattern, and prepared by milling quinacridone with a solid caustic alkali in the presence of an inert organic liquid non-solvent and then decomposing the alkali salt which forms with water or an alcohol, is incorporated in coating compositions containing also a suitable vehicle and in rubber or plastics compositions containing the quinacridone dispersed in a rubber or plastics matrix. The compositions are yellowish red in colour. Examples include an alkyd melamine printing paint, a nitrocellulose lacquer, an alkyd paint containing safflower oil modified alkyd resin, an acrylic water paint, a flexo ink containing rosin modified maleic acid resin, a polyvinyl chloride composition containing also dioctyl phthalate, dibutyl tin dilaurate and cadmium stearate, a polyethylene composition containing also zinc and cadmium stearates, a polystyrene composition containing also aluminium stearate, a polyvinylidene chloride composition containing also calcium stearate and a natural rubber composition.
