Crystobalite is incorporated in an amorphous glass matrix by firing on the substrate under conditions in which some or all of the crystobalite in the frit remains undissolved during coating. A coating having a compressive stress 'in the range 1500 to 8000 p.s.i. at 100‹ F. is thus produced; 50-85% wt. of the coating should preferably be silica (including crystobalite). The crystobalite is incorporated in a conventional frit as particles of 5 to 175 microns. Multiple coatings can be given. |
