In a fluid bearing, the shaft is concentrically maintained by a balancing device integral therewith. In an embodiment, the shaft 2 is mounted in a sleeve 3 and pressurized fluid is supplied to an inlet 41 in the sleeve and into a manifold 42 thereof, from where it passes into radial passages 43 and an axial bore 44 in the shaft. The axial bore 44 of the shaft 2 supplies fluid to equispaced annular chambers 21-23 therein by means of radial passages 46, longitudinal passages 26 and radial passages 27, and the fluid is returned to a sump via grooves 31-33 and channels 37, 38. The balancing device 4 has an annular member 1 supported by walls 5, 6 which are held to the shaft by a shoulder 8 thereof and by a nut 9 threaded thereon. A spacer-ring 7 is positioned between said walls 5, 6 and a continuous annular space so formed is separated into chambers 17-19 by rollers 11-13, the arcuate displacements of which are limited by stops 51-53 on the ring 7. Pressurized fluid is supplied to each chamber 17, 18 or 19 through radial passages 25 which connect to the longitudinal passages 26. In use, an offset weight such as " B " has its centrifugal force compensated by the rollers 12, 13 being re-positioned nearer to the roller 11. This is effected by an increase in pressure in the annular chamber 21 which produces a corresponding increase of pressure in the chamber 17, the pressures in the annular chambers 22, 23 and in the chambers 18, 19 being subsequently decreased. When the pressures in the annular chambers 21-23, and hence in the chambers 17-19, are equalised, the rollers 12 and 13 remain stationary in their displaced positions. The rollers 11-13 may have axial bores therein to facilitate their arcuate displacement and restrictors 30, 47 may be provided in the radial passage 25 and in the longitudinal passage 26 respectively. |
