1,127,076. Coated substrates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 Nov., 1966 [8 Dec., 1965; 21 Feb., 1966]. Nos. 52089/65 and 7495/66. Headings B2E and B2K. A layer of orientable hydrophobic polymer is coated on one or both surfaces with a thermoplastic polymer and the coated layer is stretched to produce a coated oriented layer of the hydrophobic polymer, the total thickness of the coating or coatings being at least fifty times thinner than the thickness .of the layer of hydrophobic .polymer and the thermoplastic polymer having a softening point lower than the temperature at which the hydrophobic polymer is stretched. The thermoplastic polymer may be applied as a solution or dispersion. The hydrophobic polymer layer may be uniaxially oriented before coating. Specified hydrophobic polymers are polytetra-fluoroethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene and poly-propylene. The hydrophobic polymer may be in the form of a tube. Specified thermoplastic polymers are (polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate, hydrolised polyvinyl acetate, copolymers of butadiene with acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate copolymers of methyl methacrylate or styrene with butadiene, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid or esters thereof, copolyesters of terephthalic acid, soluble polyesters, polyamides and copolymers of vinylidene chloride with acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, allyl acrylates, itaconic acid, methacrylic acid or acrylic acid. Further coatings e.g. of copolymers of vinylidene chloride with acrylonitrile may be applied. The coatings may be applied by wick or by roller, the coating material preferably being applied as a solution or dispersion. |
