1,216,431. Seals. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG - NURNBERG A.G. 19 March, 1969 [20 April, 1968], No. 14497/69. Heading F2B. A sealing device between a cooling pipe 1 and an air vessel in which the pipe telescopes in a water-cooled I.C. engine, comprises a sleeve 4 which encircles the pipe with clearance to form a gap to which a barrier air or water is introduced during running of the engine, and a lip seal 16 for preventing escape of cooling water from the air vessel to the crankcase 5 when the engine is not running, the sleeve being yieldably-connected to the air vessel neck 3 and mounted in the crankcase for universal movement. The sleeve 4 is arranged to swivel in a pivotably-mounted ring 6 in the manner of a gimbal, the lower end of the sleeve being yieldably-fitted on the neck 3 by an elastomeric sealing ring 11. Barrier air supplied through an inlet 12 passes through three or more throttling bores 14 to seal and centralize the pipe 1. The lip seal 16 at the slower end of the sleeve seals the gap 15 when the engine is stopped but is lifted clear by the pressure of the sealing fluid during operation. The sleeve may be made of, or provided with, a lining 17 of porous material such as sintered metal or porous carbon. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), water instead of air is supplied to the gap (15) and the leakage from the gap collected at the upper end of the sleeve in a space (18) provided with a discharge outlet (19) and a lip seal (20). |
