1,144,151. Metalated hydrocarbon polymers and graft polymers thereof. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 23 May, 1966 [24 May, 1965 (2)], No. 22880/66. Headings C3G and C3P. A hydrocarbon polymer containing allylic and/or benzylic hydrogen atoms is dissolved in an organic solvent and reacted with a lithium alkyl in the absence of free monomer. The resulting metalated polymer may be grafted with an olefinic hydrocarbon monomer. Specified polymers are homopolymers or copolymers of conjugated dienes, e.g. butadiene or isoprene or of vinyl aromatic compounds and copolymers of a conjugated diene and a vinyl aromatic compound, e.g. styrene, 3-methyl styrene, 4- methyl styrene, 3,5-diethyl styrene, 4-n-propyl styrene, 2,4,6-trimethyl styrene, 4-dodecyl styrene, 3 - methyl - 5 - n - hexyl styrene, 2,4,6 - tri - tert. - butyl styrene or 2,3,4,5- tetramethyl styrene. The polymer may be random or block. When the polymer is prepared using an alkyl lithium compound as catalyst, an additional amount of said compound is added after polymerization for metalation of the polymer. A polar solvent, e.g. a tertiary amine or an ether may be employed alone or with a hydrocarbon diluent during the metalation reaction. The grafting monomers specified are conjugated dienes, styrenes and vinyl-naphthalenes. In the examples, butadiene-styrene random copolymers containing divinyl benzene units, polybutadiene containing, in some cases, divinyl benzene units, a butadiene-styrene block copolymor and a styrene-vinyl toluene copolymer are metalated with n-butyl lithium in a solvent selected from cyclohexane, isobutane and n-pentane, together with triethylamine in certain examples. The metalated polymers are grafted with styrene or, in the case of the styrene-vinyl toluene copolymer, with 1,3- butadiene. The polybutadiene-styrene graft polymer is compounded with vulcanizing agents and fillers and cured. |
