A wedge breech block 4 for a gun having a replaceable ring packing 7 fitted in a recess 6 in the rear of the barrel 2 is provided with a locking member 9 which is displaceable in the breech block 4 parallel to the axis of the barrel. When the breech block 4 is being closed and if the ring packing 7 is missing, the locking member is urged into the recess 6 to prevent further movement of the breech block. In the construction shown, the locking member 9 is spring- loadedly disposed within a sleeve 10 which is secured to the breech block 4 by a screw bolt 23. The locking member 9 is retracted from its locking position by screwing a tool into a socket 19 in its outer end and the sleeve 10 is urged from the breech block by screwing a screw bolt through a threaded bore 21 such that the forward end of the screw bolt engages a face of the breech block and exerts a force thereon. The threads in the blocking member, in the bore 21 and in the breech block 4 match each other. |
