A method of grinding the blades of side cutters comprises rotating the cutting edge of a blade to be ground into engagement with a grinding disc arranged to grind the whole length of the edge, the rotation being effected by swinging the blade about its pivot to the other blade which is held clamped. The blades are so ground that they are parallel when spread a distance H, Fig. 1, apart whereby, in use, the outer ends of the cutting edges initially contact and then the whole length when force is applied to elastically deform the cutters. In apparatus for carrying out the method, the cutters are held in a clamp 7 wherein they are positioned by a stop 8 and each blade is ground by a respective grinding wheel 16, 17 mounted on a slide 12, 13 movable by an hydraulic motor 18, 19 to positions determined by adjustable stops 20, 21, H/2 beyond a centre line passing through the pivot for the blades. The clamp 7 consists of separate means for clamping each blade, one means comprising sectors 29, 30 on a lower sleeve 31 and wings 32, 33 on an upper piston 34, and the other means comprising sectors on an upper sleeve 37 and wings on a lower piston 40, each means being separately operable by control cylinders to clamp a respective blade during grinding of the edge of the other blade which is rotated about its pivot into engagement with the respective grinding wheel. Alternatively, each blade may be held fixed and the grinding wheels moved to effect the grinding of the blades. The grinding wheels may be trued by tools 23 movable by a motor 24. The stop 8 is movable into and out of operative position by a pressure cylinder 26. |
