A method of making a neutral conductor consisting of corrugated wires disposed concentrically on a cable core, comprises uniformly distributing the individual wires on a circle concentric to the core, advancing the core axially and advancing the wires therewith, corrugating the wires one after the other by deflecting them transversely with respect to the core axis in dependence on the speed of advance, applying the corrugated wires to the surface of the core side-by-side, in positions oriented longitudinally with respect to the core, and securing the corrugated wires by taping and/or a sheath. An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a hollow nipple having a bore 4 through which the cable passes and a number of bores 3 in the wall of the nipple which emerge at a conical face 5 formed between the large rear end of the nipple and the smaller diameter front end 6. A roller 7 which has edges chamfered to the same angle as the conical face 5, is rotatably mounted in a bracket attached to a ring 9 having external teeth which mesh with a driving pinion 10. The wire leaving the bore 3 is engaged by the roller 7 and two bends are formed in the wire. The rate of movement of the wire is related to the speed of rotation of the ring 9 so that during one revolution of the ring the wire advances by a distance c which equals a+b where a is the distance from a collar 8 to the junction of the smaller diameter 6 with the conical face, and b is the distance from this junction to the bores 3. In order to avoid the necessity for changing the nipple when the amplitude or pitch of the corrugation is to be changed, a collar 8 is mounted on the part 6, the diameter of the collar and its position along the axis being varied to adjust the amplitude and pitch. The ring 9 is movable axially to space the wheel 7 away from the face 5 by the wire thickness. |
