In a printing device comprising means, such as a continuously-rotating cylinder 11 with circumferential rows of type, for presenting a set of type to each of a plurality of character positions along a printing line, a hammer mechanism is provided consisting of a number of drive hammers 13 each having a width along the printing line spanning a plurality of character positions, and each having associated therewith an interposer or printing hammer 15 of character width, the hammers 15 being moved stepwise in the line direction to print a line. As shown the drive hammers 13 have a width corresponding to four characters, and each hammer 15 is moved leftward three steps from its initial rightward position i.e. a line is printed in four cycles of the machine. The hammers 13 are electromagnetically-operated as described in U.S. Specification 3,266,418. The hammers 15 are of spring steel or other hard flexible metal and are formed as part of a carriage 19 which is moved in the line direction by a link 47 having followers engaging a cam 53. The cam 53 is rotated one quarter of a revolution for each actuation of a wrap-around spring clutch 25 by a pivoted arm 41 actuated by a solenoid at each revolution of the drum 11 under the control of timing circuits. The cam 53 operates to move all the hammers 15 one character width at each quarter revolution and then to return them to their initial positions ready for printing the next line. The mechanism may, however, be designed to move the interposer hammers 15 in opposite directions during the printing of successive lines. Instead of using a cylinder 11, the sets of type may be arranged on chain type carriers.' |
