Domed wedge sections of the shell to be built in the shape of a globe are attached to pairs of segmental plates contoured to its parallels and pitched meridionally by cross struts on a frame pivoted at the axis of revolution. A torch carriage runs on a track round the outside with a flame cutter at the height of the meridional plane and a welding head is arranged for upright welding of the seams along the parallels.
