A feed supplement for ruminant animals comprises a non-toxic and non-therapeutic quantity, sufficient for improving the feed efficiency, of a polychloro or polybromohemiacetal derivative of a polyhydric alkanol, a saccharide or a polysaccharide. Exemplified supplements are the reaction products of (1) starch and chloral hydrate, anhydrous chloral, anhydrous bromal, 2,2,3-trichlorobutyraldehyde, dichloroacetaldehyde, or 2,2,2-trichloro- 1-ethoxy ethanol, (2) methyl cellulose and anhydrous chloral, (3) cellulose powder and chloral hydrate, (4) finely ground dried corn and anhydrous chloral and (5) light corn syrup and anhydrous chloral. |
