A chlorosulphonated linear substantially amorphous high-molecular weight copolymer of ethylene and an aliphatic alpha-olefin containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms in the molecule is made by reacting a solution of the copolymer with sulphuryl chloride in the presence of pyridine. The chlorosulphonated copolymers may be vulcanized in the presence of a metallic oxide, an amine, or an alkali or alkaline earth metal-salt of a weak acid. The copolymers preferably contain up to 10% chloride and from 0.2 to 3% sulphur. The amorphous copolymers are prepared by the processes described in Specifications 856,733, 856,736, 856,737. The exemplified copolymers are ethylene-propylene, and ethylene-butene copolymers. Specifications 802,843 and 810,023 also are referred to. |
