In a magnetically levitated transport system, a vehicle, for example a rocket 34, is coupled to a superconducting magnetic coil 32 by means of structural mounts 36 and 38, and when the coil 32 moves with velocity v relative to a track consisting of longitudinally extending channelshaped non-ferromagnetic members 40 and 42, the coil 32 induces eddy currents in the members 40 and 42 such that a vehicle platform 30 of the vehicle 34 is levitated and guided by repulsive magnetic forces between the vehicle 34 and the members 40 and 42. If the coil 32 moves towards the members 40 and 42 in any direction the magnetic repulsive force increases so that the vehicle 34 is stabilized by the magnetic suspension system. Auxiliary wheels (not shown) may be necessary for starting and stopping the platform 30 since the coil 32 carried by the platform 30 requires a predetermined velocity v to induce eddy currents in the members 40 and 42 which currents are of sufficient magnitude to develop a repulsive force which is able to levitate the platform 30. In a further embodiment sown in Fig. 6, the track consists of generally L-shaped non-ferromagnetic conductor members 50 and 52 which are spaced apart to form a slot 54. Legs 56 of members 50 and 52 intersect a plane passing through a magnetic coil 60 and perpendicular to plane of the figure. Still further track arrangements are shown in Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) in which lateral stabilization is effected by members (86) and (88) spaced from the central conductor (84) or by a ridge extending from the central conductor. |
