PURPOSE:To prepare benzaldehyde having various important applications in industrial fields, in high yield, by reducing benzonitrile in water or a water- containing solvent in the presence of an acid using Raney-Ni catalyst treated with a copper salt solution. CONSTITUTION:A benzaldehyde compound is prepared by reducing a benzonitrile compound in water or a water-containing solvent (e.g. methanol, tetrahydrofuran, etc.) in the presence of an acid such as acetic acid, phosphoric acid, etc., using Raney-Ni catalyst treated with a copper salt solution and obtained e.g. by suspending a developed Raney-Ni catalyst in an aqueous solution of a copper salt having a proper concentration. |
