A storage container comprises a base and upstanding sides, a pair of the sides extending above at least one other side so that a series of containers can be stacked one above another on the higher sides, leaving the lower side or sides free at its upper edges, at least the one other side being pivotal outwardly to provide access to the container when stacked, the side being supported in its upright position by its pivot or pivots engaging sockets such that only when the side is raised upwardly it is pivotable. The container comprises a wire mesh base 11, sides 17 and sides 16 which extend above the level of the tops of sides 17. The sides 17 are hinged to the base by the hinges shown in Fig. 3 which are formed of sheet metal and stiffen the corners of the base. Members 25 extending from sides 17 are bent at 26 to provide hinge pins which extend between the plates 22, 23 to hold the side erect until the side is manually raised, when the gap 28 in plate 22 and the bend 29 permit the side to be pivoted inwardly or outwardly about its hinge pins. A similar hinge arrangement 21, 31, 32 for side 16 has no bend 29 and the side pivots inwardly only. Springs 33 connect the sides to the wire and exert an over-centre action when the sides are pivoted. Extensions 41 of the taller sides 16 engage with parts 42 on the base of a similar container when erected containers are stacked. When containers are in stacked configuration the shorter sides 17 can be hinged outwardly to permit access to the contents. The base is provided with parts 43 which engage with parts 42 of an upper container when collapsed containers, with the sides folded inwards, are stacked. Instead of the wire mesh shown the sides may be filled in with sheet plastics material and the bottom surface of base 11 may be reinforced by diagonal metal strips. The base may be constructed of sheet metal or covered with plastics material. |
