1,255,480. Pipe couplings. AVICA EQUIPMENT Ltd. 2 Jan., 1969 [11 Jan., 1968], No. 1683/68. Heading F2G. In a coupling comprising two tubular end pieces 2, 4 respectively for connection to pipes to be joined and interconnected by a gimbal joint to allow universal movement and by a flexible tubular sheath, such as a metallic bellows 22, surrounding the gimbal joint and joined to each of the end pieces to prevent the escape of fluid from the coupling, the gimbal joint is formed by a four-armed cross-piece 12 positioned within pairs of diametrically opposed lugs 6, 8 extending axially from the end pieces, one pair of lugs being located between the other pair of lugs and a clearance 10 being present between the lugs; the end face of each arm of the cross-piece is connected by a pivot pin 16 to each of the lugs respectively. As shown, the bellows is welded to attachment rings 24 secured to the end pieces, and there are reinforcing plates 20 surrounding the pins 16. The hub 18 and edges of the arms of the cross-piece are rounded to minimize the effect of turbulence in fluid flowing past the cross-piece. In a modification, the pins 16 are integral parts of the crosspiece and the end pieces are made in halves split longitudinally and subsequently welded together after assembly of the cross-piece, the plates 20 being replaced by local thickening of the end pieces.
