A filter-press comprises a filter-medium in the form of an endless belt 42 pressed between frames 3 and plates 4 arranged alternately between heads 5 and 6 when filtration is being carried out (Fig. 1), means being provided so that, when the filtering operation is completed, the frames 3 can be lowered (Fig. 2) and the filter-cake discharged therefrom, and so that the belt can be made to travel on rollers while being cleaned with jets of water from nozzles 58. The slurry to be filtered is fed to each frame through passages in its upper part, and the filtrate leaves each plate through passages in its base. The filtrate is collected in a pair of "saucers" 70, and withdrawn through conduits 77. The plates 4 are connected by upper and lower links 8, 9, and are slidably-mounted on two parallel bars 2. The frames 3 are supported on two parallel rails 10, and are movably-connected with the adjacent plates by means of a vertical guiding bar 18 which pass through apertures in links 9. The intervals between frames 3 and plates 4 are closed or opened by moving head 6 forwards or backwards by means of piston rod 25 of oil-pressure motor 24. When a filtration operation has been completed, the frames and plates are separated, and the frames are lowered on rails 10 by means of the piston rod 27 of oilpressure motor 30. The "saucers" 70 are automatically opened at the same time. The cakes are then pushed out of the frames by the movement of members 63 which are actuated by oil-pressure motors 61. The filter belt, which is disposed in a zig-zag between the plates and frames, is caused to travel in direction A over rollers 46, 48, at the top and bottom of each plate, and over additional rollers 49, 50, 55, 56, the movement being actuated by driveroller 52 and electric motor 51. When the discharge of the cakes and cleaning of the belt are completed, the frames are raised, the "saucers" are closed, and the filter medium is again pressed between the plates and frames, so that the filter-press is ready for a further filtration operation.
