Starch is recovered from potatoes by rubbing these to pulp which is then split into solids and amniotic fluid, the fluid led off separately and the soilds repeatedly screened to wash out the starch. The water is on a counterflow principle and only the water from the final screen, which contains least starch, is fed back for repeat scrubbing duty. The water from the remaining screens is spun into concentrated starch paste for passing direct to the refining stage and starch-free water which is recycled. The refining stage is thus supplied with just enough water to keep the starch mobile. A pure product is obtd.
|
