摘要 1370652 Forming metal carbides SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 Oct 1971 [30 Oct 1970 16 Sept 1971] 48824/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division F4] Metal carbides are formed using an electric furnace of particular design (see Division F4). The desired metal or its oxide or hydride are mixed or ground with carbon, the resulting mixture granulated to give a selected particle size distribution, and the granules reacted by passing through said rotary furnace at a suitable temperature, e.g. 1400‹ C. to 2100‹ C. The production of the carbides of tungsten, hafnium, titanium, chromium, niobium, tantalum, vanadium, zirconium and some mixed carbides of these materials are exemplified. The carburizing step may be performed in an inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen or hydrogen and may be performed in two stages in different atmospheres. The granulating step may involve compression moulding using for example stearic acid as a binder with subsequent grinding but a pan granulator using acetone binder is also suggested. The resulting carbide may be sintered with cobalt to produce cemented carbide structures.
