A sewing machine is provided with a needlethreader comprising a hook-carrying member pivotally connected to a vertically-slidable rod depressible against spring bias by a manually-operable member to carry said hook through the needle eye. As shown, a frame 6, pivoted at 23 to the machine casing 26 and slidably supporting the needle bar 15, is formed with lugs 6A, 6B slidably supporting a rod 5 parallel to the needle bar. Needle bar 15 carries a collar 14 connected by a pivotal link 20 to a crank pin on the machine arm shaft for reciprocating the needle bar. Rod 5 carries at its lower end a collar 4 and intermediately a finger piece 7. A bell crank lever 1, pivoted at 1c to collar 4, carries on one arm a hook 2. The other arm is connected by a rod 3 to one end of a lever 8 pivoted intermediately at 8c to finger piece 7. A spring 9, conected between rod 3 and finger piece 7, biases hook 2 away from needle bar 15. A spring 11, connected between pivot 1c and lug 6A biases rod 5 upwardly. To thread the needle 17, needle bar 15 is moved to its uppermost position and downward pressure is applied to fingerpiece 7 to engage the other end 8A of lever 8 with collar 14. Further pressure on finger piece 7 serves to pivot lever 8 and thereby advance hook 2 through the eye of needle 17 for the reception of thread therein. Pivoting of lever 8 is limited by the engagement of finger piece 7 with a stop plate 12 adjustably mounted on frame 6. In a modification (Fig. 7) a finger piece (7') is slidably mounted on rod 5, and is biased upwardly against a feed collar (10) by a spring (29) interposed between finger piece (7') and a fixed collar (28), while rod 3 is connected directly to finger piece (7'). Downward pressure on the latter engages a nose (10c on collar (10) with collar 14, when further pressure serves to slide finger piece (7') against the bias of spring (29) and thereby advance hook 2 through the needle eye, finger piece 7' finely engaging stop plate 12. |
