Process comprises a catalytic oxidation of indanes of formula (I), using oxygen in the gaseous phase (R1, R2, R3 same or different, are each alkyl, or R1 and/or R3 may be H). Specif. 1-methyl-3-phenyl-indane is catalytically oxidised by air at 160-500 degrees C, pref. using a supported iron-vanadium catalyst. Anthraquinone is a starting material for dyestuffs and pesticides. |
