A compressible flat packing material, in particular for producing flat gaskets of internal-combustion engines, such as oil-sump seals, cooling-water pump flange seals or valve-bonnet seals, preferably comprising a fibre nonwoven of mineral fibres, natural fibres and/or synthetic fibres, without incorporated steel sheet, with a binder and a powdery to fine-grained filler, contains as filler a magnetisable material in quantities of preferably between 5 and 50 per cent by weight of preferably bariumferrite and/or ferrite, which if appropriate is magnetised in the fibre nonwoven. The fibre nonwoven material can thus be fixed using magnetic forces, lying flat on underlying surfaces, so that in particular a porous bearing under pressure of sealing overlays is possible. Similarly, the seals produced can be fixed with good adhesive strength as an assembly aid at sealing points where access is difficult, such as for example some flange faces on seals.
