PURPOSE:An aqueous coating material composition, consisting of a film-forming material dispersed in water and carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose and having improved viscosity stability and good compatibility with a pigment. CONSTITUTION:A composition obtained by blending (A) a film-forming material dispersed in water, e.g. homopolymer of vinyl acetate, etc., and (B) carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, preferably having 0.01-1.0 substitution degree of carboxymethyl groups and 1.5-7.0 molar substitution degree of hydroxyethyl groups. The amounts of the components to be blended are preferably 15-30wt% component (A) and 0.1-3.0wt% component (B).
