Characters, numerals, and patterns are formed on a surface of a base plate by hot stamping, the characters, etc. being defined by openings in a foil sheet comprising foil layer and adhesive layer transferred to the surface by heat and pressure. Before application of the foil sheet, the surface is subjected to a masking step in which it is printed with a resinous masking layer defining the characters, numerals, and patterns, the masking layer material being non-adhesive to the surface. The foil sheet, as applied, includes a backing. After application, the backing is removed releasing the masking layer from the surface and removing it also in the process together with overlying portions of the foil. |
