PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound having high purity by a simple method using 2,5-xylenol or 2,3,5-trimethylphenol as a raw material. SOLUTION: The objective compound of the formula (R is H or methyl) is produced either by reacting 1mol of 2,5-xylenol with 2-6mol of formaldehyde in the presence of 0.1-0.5mol of a basic catalyst and 2-12 pts.wt. (based on 1 pt.wt. of the catalyst) of water at 25-60 deg.C or by reacting 1mol of 2,3,5- trimethylphenol with 2-5mol of formaldehyde in the presence of 1-3mol of a basic catalyst and 4-12 pts.wt. (based on 1 pt.wt. of the catalyst) of water at 30-50 deg.C. |
