A process for producing brightened minerals with a high degree of brightness, in particular for preparing brightened laminated silicates, carbonates and the like, has the following steps: (1) a mineral suspension is mixed with a soda lye; (2) the mixture is dispersed by strongly agitating it; (3) a bleaching agent is added to the dispersion; (4) the mixture is ground then dispersed again; and (5) the dispersion is processed in a high gradient magnetic separator to remove paramagnetic colouring metal oxides.
