An ignition device for an airbag device has a gas bag device that can be inflated by propellant gas by a gas generator following triggering by a sensor. An ignition cartridge (4) of the ignition device can be fired mechanically by a trigger unit 912) and the ignited cartridge moves a projectile that effects a release of the generator's propellant gas. The trigger unit can be operated by a tension element 916) which is connected to a gas bag section that can be slid forwards by inflation of a gas bag (17) of the gas bag device. The trigger unit fires an annular igniter of the ignition cartridge.
